My running story

Seven Seriously Super UK Marathons

What makes someone take up competitive running? Is it the hours of gruelling training? The bleeding foot blisters? The heart that feels like it’s fit to burst as you sweat enough to fill ten buckets...?

No. It’s the adrenaline, the endorphins, the sense of accomplishment and achievement. It’s the cameradie of a competition, even though, at the end of the day, the main person you are in competition with is yourself… I recommend running: it makes you feel good, it gets you fit, and it’s all about personal power - YOU decide the pace. And you decide the place, as well…

Here are some of the great races you can take part in around the UK. Start small, with a fun run, and who knows? One of these amazing marathons could be under your belt in a year’s time…

- The New Forest Marathon, 9th September, offers 6 race options from full marathon to ‘woodland walk’ meaning it is suitable for all ages and experience of runner. Plus, you get to run through the stunningly beautiful New Forest National Park.

- The Bournemouth Marathon Festival on 7th October goes one step further by offering up a total of eight racing options, including marathon, half-marathon, 10k, 5k, and a selection of shorter races, meaning there’s something for everyone, and whole families, even, can take part.

- The Yorkshire Marathon on 14th October is set in a superb location with some amazing scenery en route. A range of charities will benefit from your footfall, too.

- The Brighton Marathon, scheduled for 14th April 2019, is set shortly before the London Marathon and so is a good warm-up. Also, it’s next to the sea, and who doesn’t like to see the sea, really?

- The London Marathon, 28th April 2019, is the biggie! The only problem with this race is that it’s so popular the places get snapped up far in advance, so make sure to book in as soon as possible.

- The Great Welsh Marathon, April 2019 (date TBC), which is billed as “flat, friendly, and incredibly scenic”.

- The Blackpool Marathon, also in April (date TBC), which is a great chance to see the pier and famous tower, if you haven’t already done so!

Remember that you do need to prepare far ahead for these races. Properly fitting shoes and clothes that allow sweat to cool and evaporate are vital. Energy gels and water are a must. If you’re travelling to the race from out of town...
